30 Years of NWI Group: Built on Precision, Grit, and Family Values

Some businesses start with a five-year plan, a pitch deck, and a perfectly mapped-out future.

NWI Group didn’t.

It started with something far more reliable: curiosity, technical instinct, and a willingness to back yourself when things didn’t quite line up the way they were “supposed” to.

The Beginning: Not Quite According to Plan

Back in 1981, fresh out of school, NWI’s Director Phillip Moraitis stepped into the world of measurement. There was, technically, a plan, in the form of a deferred university engineering degree waiting in the wings.

It never happened. But in hindsight, that might’ve been the best decision he never made.

Instead, Phillip found himself drawn to the technical side of weighing and measurement systems. The kind of work where precision matters, where details count, and where getting it right isn’t optional. What started as a job quickly became a long-term fascination with an industry that, interestingly enough, hasn’t fundamentally changed in its core purpose even today.

Learning the Craft

Phillip Moraitis didn’t just work in the field, he invested in it.

Management training through AIM, professional sales courses, and international technical training with suppliers gave him more than experience. They gave him structure. Systems. A way to think about both the technical and commercial sides of the business. It’s one thing to understand a product, but it’s another to understand how to build a business around it.

By 1988, that combination of skill and drive led him to Sydney, where he took on leadership of a weighing division for one of Australia’s largest precision weighing suppliers. Everything was tracking well… until it wasn’t.

The Turning Point

In 1993, the company was sold. With new ownership came a shift in direction—away from the technical, service-led focus Phillip believed in, toward a more product-driven model. After 13 years, he made a call that would define everything that followed.

He walked away.

1994: The First Step

In 1994, Phillip started his own business—Industrial Scale Supply and Service (ISSS). It was a focused move: stay close to customers, deliver specialised service, and do the job properly. Then, in 1996, ISSS merged with another small operation to form National Weighing & Instruments.

Growth came quickly. The business moved out of a home office and into its first industrial unit, building momentum with a loyal customer base and a clear service offering.

When Opportunity Knocks (Quietly)

The late 1990s brought a pivotal moment. As the previous company exited the market, timing aligned. NWI was well-positioned, having already expanded its NATA scope—including mass calibration—allowing it to take on service contracts and scale rapidly.

By 1999, Phillip had acquired full ownership of the business. From there, he and Kate Moraitis worked together to build and strengthen NWI alongside a growing and capable team.

It wasn’t luck. It was preparation meeting timing.

Building More Than a Business

Somewhere along the way, this stopped being just Phillip’s story. Kate Moraitis played a key role in building the financial and operational foundation of the business. Then came the next generation, Phillip and Kate’s sons —Jonathon, Theo, Alec, and Dominic—each contributing to what had quietly become a true Australian family enterprise.

That matters. Because while systems and strategy can scale a company, it’s people who sustain it.

Expanding the Footprint

With a proven formula of strong service contracts, technical expertise, and trusted relationships, NWI expanded beyond Sydney and across Australia, opening offices in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.

Growth didn’t come from shortcuts, but through the acquisition of smaller businesses—each bringing with it something valuable: a loyal customer base and a shared understanding of what good service actually looks like.

30 Years On

Today, NWI Group stands as a national operation with a reputation built not on noise, but on consistency. Yes, there’s innovation. Yes, there’s global sourcing and evolving technology.

However, at its core, the business still reflects the same principles it was founded on:

  • Do the job properly
  • Stay close to the customer
  • Never compromise on quality
  • And remain family-owned and run

Or, as Phillip puts it: “I had a dream of building a company that has a high reputation for good service and quality products. I guarantee that NWI will continue to strive for excellence.”

Thirty years in, that doesn’t sound like a slogan. It sounds like a promise that’s been kept.

NWI Group has also grown into a diverse network of specialist divisions, each supporting industries across Australia with trusted solutions in weighing, automation, fabrication, calibration, infrastructure, and logistics. Today, our family of businesses includes NWI Weighing, NWI Instrumentation, NWI Fabrication, NWI Calibration, NWI Weighbridges, and NWI Dimensioning—all united by the same commitment to quality, service, and long-term customer relationships.

So here’s to 30 years—NWI Group. We’re proud of the journey, and even more grateful for the people who made it possible. To our 60+ staff, past and present—thank you. Your hard work, loyalty, and commitment to getting it right have shaped who we are today. This milestone belongs to all of us, and we’re excited for what comes next.
