LOADCELLS: How to Know When They Need Replacing
Let’s talk about the muscle behind your industrial scale – the loadcell.
It doesn’t flash. It doesn’t beep. But it’s doing the hard work, 24/7, converting mechanical force into digital weight readings. In other words: no loadcell, no scale.
If your industrial weighing system were a rock band, the loadcell would be the bassist. Not flashy, but if it disappears, the whole operation feels wrong.
So, what happens when your loadcell starts getting tired? And how do you know before it just gives up and ghosts your system entirely?
-
What is a Loadcell, Really?
In simple terms, a loadcell is a sensor that measures force (or weight) by converting it into an electrical signal. These signals are interpreted by your scale’s display system to give you a weight reading. Pretty slick, right?
Loadcells come in different types: single-point, shear beam, S-type, compression, and more. The one you have depends on your application – from platform scales and weighbridges to hoppers and tanks.
-
How Long Should a Loadcell Last?
On average, a quality loadcell can last 8 to 10 years. With the right care (and the right forklift drivers), you might even squeeze out a bit more.
But like any hard-working component, wear and tear are inevitable.
-
Signs Your Loadcell Is in Trouble
Here’s how to know your loadcell might be crying for help:
Inconsistent readings: Numbers jumping around with no load changes.
Zero drift: You zero it… and it slowly creeps back out of calibration.
Hysteresis: Load readings don’t return to zero after removing weight.
Overload or mechanical damage: Visible warping, bent mounting hardware, or… that forklift incident no one will admit to.
Water ingress or corrosion: Especially if you’re in washdown or outdoor environments.
-
What Causes Loadcells to Fail?
Even tough gear has weak points. Here’s what shortens their lifespan:
Shock loading: Dropping heavy loads suddenly = mechanical trauma.
Moisture ingress: Seepage into the strain gauge area can ruin accuracy.
Cable damage: Rats, weather, or bad routing.
Fatigue: Long-term stress on the metal over years of use.
-
Can You Fix a Loadcell?
Not usually. Unlike other components, loadcells are precision instruments. Once the strain gauge or internal structure is compromised, replacement is the name of the game.
-
Prevention Is Cheaper Than Downtime
To get the most from your loadcells:
Schedule regular calibration and maintenance. This isn’t just good practice – it’s often required by law if you’re using trade-approved scales.
Protect your investment. Use proper mounting hardware and avoid shock loading.
Keep it dry. Water is the enemy of electronics.
