Case Study: Improving Gas Filling Automation at Supagas with NWI’s Weighing Solutions

Client: Supagas
Solutions Provided:
  • Dini Argeo 3590 Series Weight Controller with Relay Output Expansion
  • Bilanciai D70ES Indicator and Load Cells
  • Consultation and Integration Support
Overview

Supagas are a leading supplier of LPG, industrial, medical, and specialty gases across Australia. They sought to improve the precision and automation of their gas filling operations. NWI Group partnered with Supagas to deliver a custom weighing solution that updated their filling process and increased safety, efficiency, and control.

The Challenge

Supagas needed a way to automate and control the filling of gas cylinders with high accuracy, while also allowing flexibility for future expansion. Their gas filling stations required weight-based triggers to manage gas flow — a critical aspect for both safety and consistency.

Additionally, they were working within an active and evolving site environment, making installation flexibility and ease of integration essential.

The Solution

NWI supplied a combination of innovative weighing technology and practical integration advice, including:

  1. Dini Argeo 3590 Series Controller for Automation

Installed in mid-2024, this intelligent weight controller was the main piece of the automation upgrade. It manages:

Three connected scales:
  • 2x 150kg x 0.05kg platform scales
  • 1x 3000kg x 1kg pallet scale
  • Gas flow control via mA output and relay triggers

Custom weight targets, enabling the system to automatically cut off gas flow when preset limits are reached

To extend functionality, NWI also supplied relay output expansion cards, allowing Supagas to tailor the system for multiple simultaneous fill points — an essential feature in their high-throughput environment.

  1. Bilanciai D70ES Indicator with Custom Tank Frame

As part of a separate but related project, NWI also provided Bilanciai D70ES indicators and load cells for a custom-built CO₂ tank weighing system. Supagas designed and fabricated the frame in-house, integrating two gas cylinder cages directly into the dead load. This system enabled real-time monitoring of gas levels during filling and usage.

The Results

Supagas now benefits from:

Greater automation and process control:
The system accurately stops gas flow when target weights are reached, reducing risk and human error.

Custom scalability:
With the relay output expansions, the setup can adapt to additional tanks or changing workflows.

Data accuracy and operational efficiency:
Precise weighing ensures optimal fill levels and better resource management.

Despite ongoing construction at the site, the system has already improved reliability and safety, with more upgrades planned as the site develops.

Conclusion

NWI’s solution for Supagas demonstrates the power of smart integration — combining robust weighing hardware with intelligent controllers to automate and optimise a critical industrial process. The use of Dini Argeo and Bilanciai technology provided the flexibility, accuracy, and control Supagas needed to future-proof their operations.
